Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone

Princess Alice of Albany (1883-1981), daughter of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany and his wife, Princess Helen of Waldeck and Pyrmont. Granddaughter of Queen Victoria and niece of Queen Emma of the Netherlands. Married Prince Alexander of Teck, brother of Princess Mary of Wales, in 1904; became Countess of Athlone in 1917 when he relinquished his German titles and accepted the Earldom of Athlone. Hosted Crown Princess Märtha of Norway, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and other royal refugees fleeing the Nazis at Rideau Hall in Ottawa during her husband’s tenure as Governor-General of Canada in the 1940s.
