Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna (Louise of Baden)

Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna, born Princess Louise of Baden (1779-1826), consort of Tsar Alexander I. Daughter of Karl Ludwig, Hereditary Prince of Baden and his wife, Princess Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt; sister of Queen Frederica of Sweden and maternal aunt of Marie of Hesse and by Rhine. Selected by Catherine the Great as a bride for her eldest grandson, whom she married at the age of 14. Became Empress in 1801, but her mother-in-law, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, preceded her in rank, retaining the highest female position at court.

Coronation dress, 1801

The coronation of Tsar Alexander I (1777-1825) and his consort, Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna, took place at the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral on September 15, 1801. Elizabeth Alexeyevna was the first Russian Empress to don the Russian court costume on her coronation day. A full discussion of her coronation ensemble is available here.
