Princess Maud of Wales (1869-1938), youngest daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom; granddaughter of Queen Victoria and Louise of Hesse-Kassel. Married Prince Carl of Denmark in 1896. Became Queen consort of independent Norway in 1905 when her husband—who took the regnal name Haakon VII—was elected King; their son, Prince Alexander, became known as Crown Prince Olav. Moved from Copenhagen to Kristiania, where she enjoyed skiing and tobogganing. Had an acute sense of fashion and a large and varied wardrobe, much of which still exists.
